Mountains of the Moon University (MMU), in collaboration with Ghent University (UGent), Belgium, is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for highly motivated candidates to apply for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Agro-Ecological Sciences. This prestigious joint PhD programme emphasizes agrifood systems and environmental sustainability through interdisciplinary, research-driven training.
🎓 Programme Overview:
The PhD in Agro-Ecological Sciences is a PhD by research, designed to produce world-class scientists and professionals with expertise in sustainable agricultural and environmental systems. The programme is structured around two major strands:
- Animal Sciences and Aquaculture
- Crop Breeding and Biotechnology
These strands encompass a wide range of thematic specializations, including but not limited to:
- Agro-processing, Food Sciences & Nutrition
- Biosystems Engineering
- Agriculture Economics & Extension
- Soil Science & Agronomy
- Natural Resources Management
- Biodiversity Conservation & Wildlife Management
- Pollution & Waste Management
- Climate Change & Atmospheric Studies
- Environmental Law & Policy
🏫 Joint Degree Structure:
This international joint PhD is implemented under the 1+3 model:
- Year 1: Conducted at MMU (Uganda), includes cross-cutting coursework and full development of the PhD research proposal under joint supervision from MMU and UGent faculty.
- Years 2–4: Research implementation phase. The candidate will carry out field and/or lab research under continued joint supervision.
To be eligible for the joint PhD degree, each student must spend a minimum of six months at Ghent University, either in one continuous period or staggered over the duration of the programme. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive a jointly awarded doctoral degree:
- PhD in Agro-Ecological Sciences – MMU, Uganda
- PhD in Bioscience Engineering – UGent, Belgium
