🧠 What Is the Sustainable Behaviour & Systems Analysis Graduate Student Position?

Dr. Jason Hawkins is currently recruiting 1–2 highly motivated students to join a cutting-edge research group focused on methodological innovation in sustainable behaviour and systems analysis. Based in the Transportation and Ecological Choice by Households (TECH) Group, this opportunity sits within the Department of Civil Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary.

This is a fully funded graduate student position, open to applicants interested in civil engineering, economics, public policy, geography, or any related quantitative field. The research is transdisciplinary—bridging traditional engineering with behavioral science, sustainability, and systems thinking.


🎯 Research Focus: Sustainable Behaviour & Systems Innovation

The core of this opportunity is to explore how individuals and communities make decisions related to transportation, energy, and environmental sustainability. The research investigates:

  • Behavioral drivers and barriers to sustainable decision-making
  • Econometric modeling, choice modeling, and systems optimization
  • Public policy impacts on ecological choices
  • Integration of civil infrastructure and human behavior in sustainable systems

Students may work on topics related to transportation mode choice, low-carbon technology adoption, or other systems-level sustainability challenges.

📌 Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this position, applicants should:

  1. ✅ Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in:
    • Civil or Environmental Engineering

    • Other related quantitative disciplines
  2. ✍️ Demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills, including technical writing
  3. 💡 Have experience in or willingness to learn:
